I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and health and wellness coach.  I work with or suggest you work with your primary care physician to obtain helpful blood tests, such as fasting blood glucose and lipid panel, to assess effectiveness of your lifestyle changes.  These tests are often included in routine physical examinations.  I do not have prescriptive authority to order diagnostic tests.

These titles are often used interchangeably but there are scope of practice boundaries that set them apart legally.

  • Nutritionist is not a protected title. It’s up to you to do your due diligence to determine the level of education, qualifications, board certifications, experience, etc. to address your health needs.

  • Registered Dietitian/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist is a protected title.  It is within their scope of practice to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy for health conditions. They are required to have a nutrition-related Bachelor’s degree, complete an internship, and maintain continuing education credits.

  • Health & Wellness Coaches can inform and educate on general healthy living.  Many are certified by various organizations or schools.  At this time, there is no standard certification. It is not within their scope of practice to provide advice on specific medical conditions.

Many states now require licensure of health professionals to practice medical nutrition therapy to ensure another level of consumer protection.

I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist for over 30 years and am licensed to practice in Hawaii.
